Les Pépinières, Lausanne-Flon  The Esplanade du Flon is a development comprising three above-ground buildings in the last remaining plot in the Flon district (in central Lausanne), located to the north of the district's main square. In view of its hub location, the uses of the future complex will be focused on the public domain, with leisure facilities and a number of restaurants planned to ensure the Esplanade is as lively by night as by day.

The main building will be home to the Conservatoire de la Haute Ecole de Musique (HEMU). Classrooms and rehearsal spaces will be located on the upper floors, and a multi-functional concert hall with a capacity of 300 will host classical and contemporary music concerts.

A park on the roof of the main building, with public access, will bring greenery and shade to the district.

Where the past meets the future

With its immediate neighbours at Place de l'Europe 7 and Rue Jean-Jacques Mercier 13, the building at Place de l'Europe 6 forms a group with an interesting architectural coherence (work of the architect Francis Isoz, carried out between 1904 and 1908). The building is a Grade 3-listed building.

The current project allows for a general renovation of the building, by creating a new, reinforced concrete internal framework and restoration of the windows. A new underground construction has been realised in one of the two side alleys, in addition to the existing building volume.

From November 2011 the new building will house a boutique hotel operated by the Lausanne-Palace. This low-cost hotel, the only one of its kind in Lausanne, will comprise 26 cheap rooms, a restaurant facility and a roof terrace, and will offer an Internet booking service.

Work commenced: September 2010
Work due for completion: November 2011
